mai 2022, à la suite d’un échange sur Edward Hopper, mon ami Thomas me parla de
Todd Hido :
« Si tu aimes Hopper, tu aimeras Hido.
C’est Hopper croisé avec David Lynch en
version photo. »
On May 22, 2022, following an exchange about Edward Hopper, my friend
Thomas told me about Todd Hido:
« If you love Hopper, you will love Hido. This is Hopper crossed
with David Lynch in the photo version. »
Ma
culture, dans ce domaine de la photographie, est des plus minces ; je ne
connaissais pas même ce nom : Hido.
Mais, il
m’a suffit d’entrevoir alors seulement deux, trois, de ses images pour que, laissant
de côté ses possibles accointances avec le peintre et le cinéaste, je plonge
dans son ‘univers’, tel que visible sur son site.
My culture in this field of photography is
very thin; I did not even know this name: Hido. But, it was enough for me to glimpse only two,
three, of his images so that, leaving aside his possible connections with the
painter and the filmmaker, I dive into his ‘universe’, as visible on his
website:

La
nécessité de répondre, à ma façon - par la musique - a été quasi immédiate.
En
même temps, il me semblait que je pouvais faire que la musique soit accompagnée
d’images – des reproductions des œuvres de Todd Hido qui avaient
« inspiré » la musique.
Je
l’ai contacté, pour savoir s’il était d’accord sur le principe d’une telle
publication.
The need to respond, in my own way - through music - was almost
immediate. At the same time, it seemed to me that I could make music come with
images – reproductions of the works of Todd Hido that had “inspired” the music.
I contacted him to see if he agreed with the principle of such a publication.
He replied that :
« As I am inspired by the things around me
that I love, I am always grateful when my work inspires others to their own
creative pursuits. »

So here we are, with the understanding that this editing, this «staging»
of photographs of Todd Hido is in no way the product of a collaboration with
him, and that I assume full responsibility for it.

Cette
sélection est relativement arbitraire, dans ce sens qu’il y en a beaucoup plus,
qui me fascinaient tout autant ! Mais, il était question de musique,
n’est-ce pas, et de fixer ce format (de 24 pièces) correspondait à une
nécessité de « cohérence musicale ».
This selection is relatively arbitrary, in the sense that there are many
more, which fascinated me just as much! But, it was about music, you know, and
fixing this format (of 24 pieces) corresponded to a need for «musical
coherence».

- - Why ‘scape’ ?
- - I love short titles. 'Scape' doesn't mean anything in itself but
lets anyone interprete it: is it short for landscape? does someone misspell
'shape'? Does it refer to 'scapegoat'?
- - So, if
this 'scape' does not claim to say anything clearly and unequivocally, we will
let whoever discovers this title invent the meaning that suits him: escape,
landscape, or escape out of any land... It’s perfect !
