« A Gong for Eliane Radigue »

 *

A Gong for a Song, Secret Chamber, et A Cold Hell

It was at the end of the summer of 2021 that my friend Guska, as is now often done between distant musicians, sent me a “lead”, inviting me to do something with it, according to my inspiration…

At the first listen, I felt that, really, I did not see what I could add to it, so much the material of this track seemed already rich enough, and consistent as it was.

It was by seeing her again that I began to see her… as a “landscape”.

A particular landscape, like that of a rather vast valley, such as it could be discovered, at dawn, from a height: the mists dissipate, the night moves away, the sky will open to the light of the rising sun…

However, to such a landscape, what need to add anything, isn’t it?

He always asks only to be contemplated.

And then, at some point, comes the idea of going through it.

Fortunately, it’s no longer the idea of adding landscape to the landscape: it’s just – going on a hike! - to explore them, by multiplying the points of view, all configurations…

 *

The trail – the landscape proposed by Guska, had the title:

« A Gong for Eliane Radigue »

The dedication to Eliane Radigue, to this great artist, and discoverer of new lands, still unknown when she began to enter it, this dedication suited me perfectly. To the point that we then agreed to extend the dedication to the entire album whose production we had then undertaken, according to the same collaborative principle: Guska discovered a landscape, which I would then go through.

 *

A Gong for a Song, Secret Chamber, and A Cold Hell …

We had composed these three pieces when I proposed, for the fourth and last, to reverse our process: I was going to propose to Guska a landscape, which he would then come to live.

(This sentence, striking, is the French translation of a sentence (The blue of the empty sky beat like a drum ?) by Stephen Crane, which I had just found in an article on the biography devoted to him by Paul Auster: A Burning Boy. What Stephen Crane left behind shows enough that he would have been a giant of world literature in the first half of the 20th century if he had not died at the age of twenty-nine, in 1900.But that’s a different story.)

And since we have evoked landscapes in these four pieces of music, it seemed natural that their sonic reality should be visually accompanied…
